An exchange of territories between Russia and Ukraine is impossible, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitriy Peskov has said, commenting on Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s statement about the readiness to discuss the exchange of a part of Kursk Region, currently under AFU control, for territories occupied by Russian troops.
“Russia has never discussed and will never discuss the topic of exchanging its territory <…> Of course, Ukrainian compounds will be expelled from this territory,” Interfax quoted the Kremlin speaker as saying.
At the same time, Vladimir Putin and Russia are open for peace talks – this is a consistent position that is well known in the world, Peskov added.

It’s interesting to see such a firm stance from Russia regarding territorial exchanges, especially when the possibility of negotiations is often seen as a path to peace. The contrast between declaring openness to talks and simultaneously rejecting any territorial exchange highlights how complex and deeply rooted these issues are. It makes me wonder what kind of compromises, if any, could realistically lead to progress, given the current rigid positions from both sides. This situation really underscores how difficult achieving reconciliation in conflict zones can be.

The idea of exchanging territories might seem drastic, but if it could lead to peace, isn’t it worth at least considering all options? It’s hard to see how sticking firmly to no exchanges will help in the long run. The whole conflict is so heartbreaking, and I keep wondering how many more people will suffer before there’s any real progress. 😞

If land swaps are off the table, peace talks might just become the ultimate high-stakes poker game.
True peace often requires more than open talks; it demands a deeper willingness to reconcile the inviolability of identity with the fluidity of borders and shared humanity.
