Reuters: US to send guided bombs to Ukraine amid ATACMS stockpile depletion

The US is going to resume deliveries of Ground Launched Small Diameter Bombs (GLSDB) to Ukraine, Reuters reported citing its own sources.

Ukraine will be supplied with a modernized version better protected against electronic warfare. Nineteen GLSDB test launches have been conducted in recent weeks to assess the effectiveness of the modernization.

The planning bombs were purchased by the Joe Biden administration as part of a $33.2 billion order for Kiev directly from U.S. and allied defense contractors.

As the agency notes, the GLSDBs will be delivered amid reports that Ukraine’s stockpile of ATACMS systems of similar range is nearly depleted.

Ukraine will be able to receive the bombs in the coming days, as their stockpile is already in Europe. The last time Ukrainian troops used these weapons was several months ago, the Reuters source specified.

The technical enhancements to the GLSDBs are interesting. Strengthening the internal connections to resist jamming makes sense, but I’m curious about the specifics. What frequency bands are they targeting? What other countermeasures are in place? More details on the upgrades would be appreciated.

While I appreciate the effort, I’m skeptical about how much these GLSDBs will actually change the situation on the ground. Russia’s EW capabilities are significant. Are we sure these upgrades are truly effective and not just a PR move?
